New Plugin: Google Translate for Comments (51 languages!)

This is super-cool!  We’re excited to introduce a new IntenseDebate plugin developed by Sam Walters: Comment Translate.  Built using Google Translate, Comment Translate gives your readers the option to translate all comments and trackbacks on your post into their language of choice.

Languages available for comment translation:

Afrikaans Danish Greek Korean Portuguese Thai
Albanian Dutch Hebrew Latvian Romanian Turkish
Arabic English Hindi Lithuanian Russian Ukrainian
Belarusian Estonian Hungarian Macedonian Serbian Vietnamese
Bulgarian Filipino Icelandic Malay Slovak Welsh
Catalan Finnish Indonesian Maltese Slovenian Yiddish
Chinese French Irish Norwegian Spanish
Croatian Galician Italian Persian Swahili
Czech German Japanese Polish Swedish

Sam’s plugin couldn’t have come at a better time as we continue to expand our localization project to make IntenseDebate more accessible for everyone. Thanks to our fantastic group of volunteers, the IntenseDebate comment section is now available in 20 languages with more on the way!

To activate the Translate Comments plugin, visit your Plugins Page in your IntenseDebate account at http://intensedebate.com/plugins. Locate the Translate Comments plugin and select “Activate”. That’s it! It’s just that one simple click and your comments can now be translated to 51 languages!

Hat’s off to Sam for his contribution!

  1. Thanks Deya. The credit goes to Sam – he's the mastermind behind this plugin. 🙂

We're aware of the recent increase in spam, and we are currently working to improve our Akismet integration to clean up the problem. We hope to roll this out in the near future.

Currently we do not offer a Captcha option. Unfortunately Captcha is not a long-term solution to spam – it’s becoming less effective than ever because it’s cheap for spammers to pay people to fill out Captcha's all day long. A better solution needs to be content based, like Akismet is, and we're currently working with our colleagues at Automattic to fix this.

Please email me at support@intensedebate.com with your URL and I'll be happy to help out.

  3. Well actually, I might do. I currently have a "kind of working solution" setup with two different installation of IntenseDebate for my website that uses qTranslate so I could use English and Hebrew but it would interesting to see if it would be possible to automatic such a solution for people whom uses qTranslate (or such other translation plugins).

  4. Excellent! Give me a shout at the labs@intensedebate.com email addy with any questions.

Side note: we're taking a look at the CSS issue on your Hebrew site. Probably has to do with RTL. I'll let you know.

  5. Respected friend,
Do you actually read/write/speak the Latin in which you posted in some of your testing comments? I thought I understood the language to a fair degree, but, frankly, if those comments were "off the cuff", I am so humbled that I must abase myself.
Is my understanding of "lingua franka" so behind current use?
    Respects,
    Jim

  8. Oh right, thank you very much. It likely will be to do with RTL, I know IntenseDebate yet to support that yet.

I am currently in process of re-sorting that site out, finally getting around to it. I am currently installing a Sandbox installation, gonna see what I can do.

I certainly will e-mail you if I am in need of any help 🙂
